reliable sources for information

Sources of Information

“Independent media is most likely to hold Trump accountable, even when that media has an acknowledged bias. These include outlets like

  • ProPublica
  • Courtier News
  • Crooked Media
  • Zeteo
  • The Bulwark
  • Judd Legum’s Popular Information

This also includes online creators like

  • Hasan Piker
  • Elizabeth Booker Houston
  • David Pakman
  • Brian Tyler Cohen

These folks are not traditional journalists. They don’t do the same thing traditional journalists do, but they are the future of media — and are more likely to boldly advocate for our democracy.” (Message Box)

Highly factual, less biased news sources

I rely on Media Bias Fact Check (https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/)  to check that sources are factual and least biased.

This list from Media Bias are sources that they rate as least biased

For the full list: https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/center/ (But in the full list click on the source to see how it is rated factually.)

Many of these sources have free daily newsletters

If you live in the Lake County Public Library district and have a resident library card, you can access NW Indiana Times, Post Tribune, New York Times and other newspapers by going to their website, https://www.lcplin.org/ and clicking on ‘Research’, Online Research Tools and then Newspapers, Articles & Encyclopedias. Then choose the newspaper you wish to read and follow the online prompts.

More sources, reliable, but mostly with a liberal bias:

  • Letters from an American is a newsletter and post from historian Heather Cox Richardson. She often provides historical context to the news and everything is sourced. Media Bias Fact Check (that I use to determine reliability and bias of a source) has not rated her. I suspect she leans moderately left but is factual. I find her an excellent source for news and putting that news into perspective. You can subscribe on Substack and/or for the newsletter here: https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/. You can also listen on her podcast, Letters from an American: https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/podcast. They all provide the same content.

The following sources were recommended by attendees at our Jan. meeting:

From Media Bias Fact Check:

  • Public Notice is a subscription-based newsletter and online news outlet founded and operated by Aaron Rupar, a prominent journalist known for his political analysis on various platforms. Public Notice, based in Minnesota, provides progressive perspectives on major political developments, emphasizing accountability and transparency in governance. It is rated as very left leaning and mostly factual. You can subscribe here: https://www.publicnotice.co/about
